General Director Environmental & Sustainability Dept.
Born in Malaga, Luis Medina-Montoya Hellgren holds and MsC in political science and Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a double major in international relations and political science. He also has a diploma on foreign trade by the Chamber of Commerce and industry of Madrid and the Diploma on French civilization & culture –DULCIF- from the University of Burgundy (Dijon).
He has developed his professional career in sales management, marketing and general management positions mainly in multinational companies belonging to sectors as diverse as the automotive, telecommunications and direct sales (products and services).
He has travelled extensively all over the world and speaks fluent English, French and Italian. In June 2011, he took a professional leap into public service and returned from Madrid to his native Malaga attending the call from the Mayor of Malaga, Mr. Francisco de la Torre, to become the general director of the environment and sustainability department. Since February 2013 and until the dissolution of the autonomous body, in January 2016, he acted as well as managing director of the botanical and historic gardens of “La Concepción” and “La Consula”.
He is a representative of the city of Malaga in the European network of municipalities EUROCITIES being a member of the working groups on noise and waste.
In October 2016, he was appointed as one of the three representatives for the Federation of Spanish Cities and Provinces –FEMP- on the Commission for national coordination on waste management, which brings together the Spanish ministry for the environment and the 17 regional governments. Within this organization he belongs to the working group on Circular economy, which drafted Spain’s strategy on CE, approved on summer 2020, as well as the working works on packaging and WEE.
